After the events of the previous Marvel Studio movies (in particular Avengers: Age Of Ultron and the destruction of the city of Sokovia) the world has become very aware of those enhanced with super abilities and wary of the collateral damage left in the wake of such events. After a mission ends in disaster and the deaths of innocent bystanders, the United Nations agrees that independent heroes, or rather “vigilantes” should be held accountable for their actions and be forced to sign up to the Sokovian accords, a sort of registration for enhanced individuals who would then be under the command of the United Nations. As a fan of the Marvel movies I was profoundly disappointed six months ago by Thor: The Dark World which suffered from lacklustre writing that dumbed down story and character in favour of action. I didn’t hate the movie, but it was my least favourite of all the Marvel movies made to date. I wondered if Marvel’s cinematic success may have ended and the series may have run its course, but if anything Captain America: The Winter Soldier has both restored my faith in the series and set the bar high for its future. I hate for things to be spoiled, so believe me when I say this will be spoiler free, and will only discuss in detail the opening 25 or so minutes.
Chris Evans playing against his usual type of character, in a ‘true story’ courtroom drama from brothers Adam and Mark Kassen.
First impressions: I have to admit to having become a fan of Evans recently, with his appearances lately in movies such as Push, Street Kings, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, and of course Captain America: The First Avenger, he’s raised his profile with consistently decent performances that makes me want to see this.
