We learn in the opening prologue that the title refers to the planet of the Dark Elves, where thousands of years ago a war was waged between them and Asgard. Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), the leader of the Dark Elves tried to use a weapon called the Aether – capable of enveloping the universe in darkness, but Bor (Tony Curran) leader of the Asgard, defeated them and took the Aether to hide it. On present day Earth while searching for signs of Thor with her equipment, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) stumbles upon the hiding place of the Aether, accidentally becoming host to it, and awakening Malekith and the last of the Dark Elves.
